Cathedral Rock is one of Sedona’s most photographed landmarks, and the trail to its saddle is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the entire Southwest.
The Trail
The hike itself is only 1.5 miles round trip, but don’t let the mileage fool you. The final push to the saddle involves real scrambling over red sandstone slabs, some of which require using your hands. The trail is marked with cairns and well-worn enough that navigation isn’t an issue, but footing demands your full attention.
What to Expect at the Top
From the saddle, you’re rewarded with one of the most dramatic views in Arizona. Oak Creek curves through the valley below, and the surrounding red rock formations feel close enough to touch. Sunrise and sunset are the best times — the rocks turn a deep amber that photos don’t fully capture.
Practical Notes
- Parking: Back O’ Beyond Trailhead fills fast. Arrive before 8am on weekends or expect to wait. The Red Rock Pass is required.
- Dogs: Not allowed on this trail.
- Water: Bring at least 1 liter per person. No water on trail.
- Scrambling: The upper section requires climbing over rocks. If scrambling makes you nervous, turn around at the base of the slabs — the views are still excellent.
